When poorly absorbed carbohydrates ferment in the large bowel it results in the generation of hydrogen and methane gas. Both of these gases are only produced by intestinal bacteria and are detected in the air we breath out making the breath test highly specific. A Low FODMAP diet and fasting are required in the 24 hours prior to testing.
Breath tests are simple, non invasive and are safe to use in adults, pregnancy and in children. They can be arranged through our gastrointestinal dietitians or through Gastrolab. For more information on what your breath test results mean, visit HERE.
